Christine Perfect, later Christine McVie, joined as keyboardist in 1970 following her marriage to John McVie, having previously performed with Chicken Shack. The band’s original lineup underwent significant turnover in its early years, with departures by Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer, and guitarist Danny Kirwan, followed by a period featuring guitarist Bob Welch.

Career

The 1975 self-titled album Fleetwood Mac introduced the new lineup and produced hits including “Rhiannon” and “Landslide,” but it was 1977’s Rumours that transformed the band into a global phenomenon.

Written and recorded amid the collapse of two relationships within the group, John McVie and Christine McVie’s marriage and Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks’ romance, the album became one of the best-selling records of all time and won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year.

The follow-up, the sprawling double album Tusk (1979), took a more experimental direction, while Mirage (1982) and Tango in the Night (1987) restored the band to the pop charts. Lindsey Buckingham departed after Tango in the Night to pursue a solo career, with the band continuing through albums like Behind the Mask (1990) and Time (1995) before the classic lineup reunited for 1997’s live album The Dance and the 2003 studio album Say You Will.

Lindsey Buckingham was fired from the band in 2018 over disagreements about touring, and the group continued briefly with replacement guitarists before effectively going on hiatus.
