Hyrum developed an interest in rock music in childhood, especially with his longtime friends and future Riff Wood bandmates, Carson Groves and Asher “Shredder” Winegar. The three boys began making music together at 11, despite having little experience playing instruments at first.
The friends taught themselves their instruments and began performing at school talent shows and backyard parties before developing Riff Wood into a serious musical project. Their shared interest in bands like Green Day shaped their early musical direction.

Career
Hyrum Russon started his musical career alongside Carson Groves and Asher Winegar when the three friends formed Riff Wood at age 11. Hyrum became one of the band’s singer-guitarists, contributing vocals, guitar, and songwriting as the group developed its own alternative-rock sound.
Riff Wood gained wider recognition after winning the Utah Battle of the Bands as teenagers. Their performances later attracted a growing online audience, helping the band move from local school and community shows to professional production and touring.
The trio released its debut album Tough Luck, featuring the song “Blur.” The track became one of the band’s biggest early successes and has accumulated millions of Spotify streams. By 2025, Riff Wood had also developed a substantial streaming audience and had begun touring outside Utah.
Their growing online presence attracted Rob Cavallo, the Grammy-winning producer associated with artists including Green Day, Linkin Park, and My Chemical Romance. Cavallo contacted the young musicians after seeing their performances online and later produced their second album.
In September 2026, Riff Wood released its second album, Butterfly In Black And White, through Giant Music. The six-song project includes the single “Down to Nowhere” and represents the group’s progression from a young local band into an internationally touring rock act.
