Early Life

Geoffrey Arnold Beck, later known as Jeff Beck, was born in suburban London on June 24, 1944.

Unlike his mother, who favoured the piano, Jeff was captivated by the electric guitar from a young age.

He found the instrument’s “fascinating plank of wood with knobs and switches” to be irresistible.

By age 10, he developed his singing abilities in the church choir, which set the groundwork for his musical talent.

During his teenage years, he became drawn to bands and became the lead guitarist for “The Tridents,” acquiring important experience performing live.

Education

Jeff Beck’s early education was centred on visual arts rather than music. He attended art schools such as Sutton Manor School, Sutton East County Secondary Modern School, and Wimbledon School of Art in London.

Despite his initial focus on art, Beck left art school to follow his passion for music, specifically guitar playing.

Even though he lacked formal music training, Beck taught himself how to play the guitar and honed his skills through hard work, trial and error, and drawing inspiration from fellow guitarists like Les Paul and Jimmy Page.

Career

Beck started his musical journey in 1964 by joining the Yardbirds after Eric Clapton left.

Known for his innovative guitar skills and unique style, he challenged the traditional boundaries of blues-rock by creating songs such as “Over Under Over” and “Shapes of Things.”

Following his departure from the Yardbirds, Beck started a solo career, exploring different musical styles and working with notable musicians such as Jimmy Page and John McLaughlin.

In 1967, he established the Jeff Beck Group, which included future Led Zeppelin members Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood. The band gained popularity with songs like “Beck’s Bolero” and “Superstition.”

In 1972, Beck formed the power trio Beck, Bogert & Appice, known for their virtuosic instrumental rock.

He then transitioned to a more experimental and instrumental style, incorporating jazz fusion, electronica, and other influences into his music. Albums like “Blow by Blow” and “Wired” showcased his sonic innovation and earned him critical acclaim.

During the 1980s and 90s, Beck delved into various music genres and worked alongside musicians such as Sting, Cyndi Lauper, and Imelda May.

Beck’s popularity soared with the release of his 1993 album “Crazy Fingers,” which included the Grammy-winning instrumental piece “A Change is Gonna Come.”
