Máire Philomena Ní Bhraonáin was born on August 4, 1952 in Dublin, Ireland, to Leo Brennan, a musician and owner of Leo’s Tavern, and Máire Duggan, a teacher and traditional singer.

She was raised in Gweedore, County Donegal, in the Irish-speaking Gaeltacht region alongside numerous siblings, including her famous younger sister Enya (born Eithne Ní Bhraonáin) and brothers Pól, Ciarán, and Leon, among others.

Máire Philomena Ní Bhraonáin began her musical career in 1970 when she co-founded Clannad with her siblings Pól, Ciarán, and their twin uncles.
