Pat Monahan was born on 28 February 1969 in Erie, Pennsylvania, to parents Jack Monahan, a clothing store owner and musician, and Patricia Ann Monahan.

He attended St. Jude School and later McDowell High School in Millcreek Township before enrolling at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. He is of Irish descent and Christian.

Pat Monahan began performing in the late 1980s as the lead singer of the Erie-based cover band Rogues Gallery.
