His mother, Dirce Sabino Pereira, suffered a stroke when he was seven and remained in a vegetative state for about two years before dying, after which Projota went to live with his grandmother, Lourdes, who helped raise him and his cousins.

He began engaging with rap culture in his teens and became involved in battle rap circuits. He has said that his first musical alias was “JT,” but later adopted “Projota,” a name combining “pro” (professionalism) and “Jota,” referencing his first name initial.

Career

Projota’s entrance into the Brazilian rap industry came through battle rap: he won the Batalha da Santa Cruz four times and the Rinha dos MCs three times in the mid-2000s. Early works included an EP Carta aos Meus (2009), and subsequent mixtapes Projeção (2010) and Projeção pra Elas (2011).

He also released Muita Luz (2013) as a mixtape, which helped expand his audience. His first full studio album under a major label was Foco, Força e Fé (2014), released via Universal Music. That album featured collaborations with Negra Li, Marcelo D2, Dado Villa-Lobos, and others. It delivered hits like “Enquanto Você Dormia” and “O Homem Que Não Tinha Nada.”

Later studio albums included A Milenar Arte de Meter o Louco (2017), Tributo aos Sonhadores I (2019), and Tempestade Numa Gota D’Água (2020). He released a live DVD 3Fs ao Vivo in 2016, which earned gold certification for sales above 40,000 copies.

Outside music, Projota has acted in television series — for example in Carcereiros (2018) and Ninguém Tá Olhando (2019). He also joined Big Brother Brasil in 2021 (season 21), staying in the house until being evicted after 51 days, finishing in 14th place.
