Early Life and Education
Raury was born on June 10, 1996, in Stone Mountain, Georgia, and was raised primarily by his mother, Rosalyn. He is the youngest of three siblings and grew up alongside an older brother named Rodney and an older sister identified as Calvis.
His father was largely absent during his childhood. Raury attended Tucker High School, where football initially occupied much of his attention.
Music became increasingly important to Raury during his teenage years. He taught himself guitar using YouTube tutorials at 11 and began writing songs at a young age.
At 14, he decided to pursue music seriously, later recording songs in a friend’s basement. His upbringing in the Atlanta area, particularly the creative atmosphere of Little Five Points, influenced his artistic outlook and genre-blending approach.
Career
Raury’s professional rise began during his teenage years. In 2012, he became the first artist signed to Atlanta-based Love Renaissance, and in August 2014 he released his debut mixtape, Indigo Child.
The project attracted substantial attention and led to a recording agreement involving Columbia Records.
His song “God’s Whisper” became one of his defining early releases, while his appearance on Lorde’s “Lost Souls” on the The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 soundtrack expanded his international profile.
In 2015, Raury was selected for the XXL Freshman Class and placed fourth on the BBC Sound of 2015 list.
His debut studio album, All We Need, arrived in October 2015 and reached the Billboard 200, establishing him as one of the more distinctive young alternative artists of the period. The album included “Friends,” featuring Tom Morello, and “Crystal Express,” which appeared in FIFA 16.
Raury left Columbia in 2018 and continued releasing music independently. His later projects include The Woods, Fervent, Strawberry Moon, Strawberry Moon Eclipsed, Transcendence, Southern Mystic, and The Blue Shell Theory.
In 2021, he also launched The Woods, a nonprofit initiative focused on connecting music, nature, community, and sustainable living.
His independent period has remained active into the mid-2020s. Releases in 2024–2025 included “Southern Mystic,” “The Blue Shell Theory,” “BONFYE,” “Ghost,” “Aquamarine,” “Super Sonic,” and “Bronte’s Groove.”
In 2025, he described “BONFYE” as part of a new chapter leading toward Indigo Child 2. His latest listed single is “Light Speed,” released in 2026.
