Ahmad Zahir was born on June 14 1946, in Kabul, Afghanistan, he was 33 years old at the time of his death on 14 June 1979, born and raised by his parents, Abdul Zahir and Quraisha Zahir, alongside his siblings, Zahira Zahir, Belgheys Zahir and Asif Zahir.

His father, Abdul Zahir, served as a doctor to the royal court and later as Minister of Health and Prime Minister of Afghanistan.

Ahmad Zahir belonged to the Pashtun ethnicity and he practiced Islam.

He attended Habibia High School in Kabul where he formed a band with classmates and was nicknamed “Bulbul-e Habibia” (Nightingale of Habibia) for his voice.

He later graduated from Teachers’ College (Daru’l-Malimeen) in Kabul and spent two years studying in India to become an English instructor before fully dedicating himself to music.

Career

Ahmad Zahir began performing in school bands and local celebrations.

He recorded his first songs in the mid-1960s and quickly became a major star by the early 1970s.
