His mother played an important role in introducing him to dance because she enjoyed music and suggested he take dance lessons. Riwoo originally imagined pursuing professional sports because he was athletic and enjoyed physical activity, but his mother’s suggestion eventually redirected his interests toward dance.
His ethnicity is Korean. Riwoo grew up alongside two brothers, one older and one younger. His religion is Christianity. He began his formal education at Seoul Susong Elementary School, then attended Susong Middle School.
He developed a lifelong commitment to rhythmic arts in fifth grade, refining his technical popping and arm-wave mechanics at the prestigious Def Dance Skool and SMMA Academy. He completed his secondary education by graduating from the elite Hanlim Multi Art School’s Department of Practical Dance.
Riwoo began taking formal dance lessons in fifth grade, encouraged by his mother. At the time, he still wanted to become an athlete, but dance gradually became a major part of his identity.
In middle school, he had the opportunity to perform at a school festival. He danced to BTS’s “IDOL” and “DNA,” and his classmates’ reaction left a lasting impression. Ri recalled feeling particularly happy while standing on stage, and that experience became a major reason he began considering a career as a performer.
Career
Riwoo began his professional career as a trainee at KOZ Entertainment, the agency established by South Korean rapper and producer ZICO. One of his main reasons for auditioning was the chance to join KOZ’s first idol group and grow with the newly established company.
He joined KOZ one month after Sungho, and the two spent much of their trainee period practicing together. Riwoo trained for three years and eight months before BOYNEXTDOOR’s debut.
During his trainee years, dance became the central focus of his development. He worked extensively on facial expressions, stage presence and emotional interpretation so his movements could communicate the feeling of each song.
On May 30, 2023, Riwoo officially debuted as a member of BOYNEXTDOOR alongside Sungho, Jaehyun, Taesan, Leehan and Woonhak.
The group debuted under KOZ Entertainment, a HYBE subsidiary, with the single album WHO!. BOYNEXTDOOR’s debut trilogy introduced the members as performers focused on relatable stories about youth, friendship and relationships.
Riwoo quickly became particularly prominent for his dance performance, while also contributing vocals and participating in the group’s broader creative process. The group’s early releases included “But I Like You,” “One and Only,” and “Serenade.”
Riwoo’s performance style became especially visible in “One and Only,” a song whose choreography and styling let him showcase his abilities. BOYNEXTDOOR followed its debut material by releasing WHY.., which continued the group’s youthful storytelling and expanded its musical range.
In 2024, the group released HOW?, completing its initial trilogy. Riwoo discussed the demanding choreography for “Earth, Wind & Fire” and explained how he approached performance by identifying specific emotional and visual moments in the choreography.
Later in 2024, BOYNEXTDOOR released 19.99, another major step in its development. The project continued the group’s conversational songwriting style while exploring the experiences and emotions surrounding the transition into adulthood.
The group later released No Genre, expanding its musical identity beyond a single style. Riwoo remained an important part of the group’s stage performances, particularly in choreography-heavy material.
BOYNEXTDOOR embarked on its first major concert tour, KNOCK ON Vol.1, which included international performances. The tour’s final Seoul performances were later documented on the live album BOYNEXTDOOR TOUR ‘KNOCK ON Vol.1’ FINAL (LIVE), released in February 2026.
In 2026, Riwoo and the other BOYNEXTDOOR members released the group’s first full-length studio album, HOME, on June 8.
The album included 10 tracks that explore memories from the members’ trainee years, their relationships, their families, and their development since debut. Riwoo is credited as a writer and composer on the tracks.
The group’s title track “VIRAL” became one of its major 2026 releases. BOYNEXTDOOR subsequently won “VI in June 2026. As of September 2026, Riwoo remains an active member of BOYNEXTDOOR.
