Early Life and Education
Sula Miranda is 62 years old, born on November 12, 1963, in the city of São Paulo. She was raised in a modest household, the daughter of Maria José and Mário de Miranda. She grew up with two sisters: Yara and Maria Odete (better known as Gretchen).
From a young age, Sula faced serious health challenges: she was born with a narrowed larynx and an enlarged thymus, which made breathing and feeding risky in her infancy. At one point doctors proposed a tracheostomy, but her mother rejected it, and instead medical treatment succeeded in averting the surgery.
Her upbringing included exposure to music early on: the family home had a large lower-floor hall where the sisters sang and played instruments together. Sula and her sisters imitated music from the Jovem Guarda era on the little phonograph they had, and they learned instruments such as the violão (guitar) and piano.
Personal Life
Sula Miranda‘s personal life has included heartbreak and public scrutiny. She married her first husband, Luís Flávio Rocha, in the 1980s. That marriage lasted until 1990, when, after a history of abuse and conflict, Rocha took his own life by firearm at home in an event that deeply affected Sula.
She later spoke of the shame, depression, and the emotional fallout she endured, including financial hardship and social judgment.
Later, from 1994 to 2004, she was married to a second husband with whom she had her only child, a son named Natan Miranda, born in 1998. After that period she remained single.
In numerous interviews, Sula has recounted the difficulties she faced — including financial strain, mental health challenges, and the demands of rebuilding her life and career — and has credited her faith (evangelical Christianity) with providing perspective and strength.
Career
Sula Miranda began her musical journey in group settings. Along with her sisters Yara and Gretchen, she initially performed in a group called As Mirandas. Later, with the addition of their friend Paula, the group evolved into the quartet As Melindrosas.
Their first LP, Disco Baby, achieved major commercial success, selling around one million copies.
In 1986, she embarked on a solo career, releasing her first solo album, Caminhoneiro do Amor. That song became a hit, especially among Brazil’s truck-driving community, earning her the nickname “Queen of Truck Drivers.”
In her early solo years she recorded a string of albums throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, including A Voz do Rádio, Rumo Certo, Lobo Amante and Estrada Afora.
Around 2008 she made a turn toward gospel music, releasing gospel albums and stepping back from secular performance for a time. In 2012 she returned to sertanejo on a more permanent basis, launching the album Prova de Amor as part of her recommitment to her original musical style.
She ran for a federal deputy seat in the 2014 Brazilian elections in São Paulo via the Brazilian Republican Party (Partido Republicano Brasileiro), receiving 3,787 votes, but did not win a seat.
