Solána Imani Rowe (born November 8, 1989), known professionally as SZA, is a proficient American singer and songwriter. Born and raised in New Jersey, she began her musical career in high school, self-releasing her first EP in 2012. 

She signed with the American indie record label Top Dawg Entertainment in 2013 and released her first extended play, See.SZA.Run, in April 2014. SZA‘s debut album, Ctrl, was released in June 2017 to critical acclaim and topped the US Billboard R&B Albums and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts. 

It also earned her five Grammy Award nominations, including Best New Artist. SZA‘s third extended play, “Z,” was released in October 2014. That same year, she co-wrote Feeling Myself by Nicki Minaj and Beyoncé.

Early Life & Education

Solána Imani Rowe, better known as SZA, was born on November 8, 1989, in St. Louis, Missouri, and raised in Maplewood, New Jersey, USA. She was born to Christian-Muslim parents. Her father worked as an executive producer at CNN. Her mother, on the other hand, also worked as an executive at AT&T.

SZA was raised with her older sister named, Tiffany Daniels. An immediate older brother named Daniel, a rapper known by his stage name Manhattan. Growing up, she practiced the Muslim fate and loved wearing her hijabs too. In addition, she attended a prep school every day after regular school.

In September, during her 7th grade, SZA stopped wearing her hijab after being bullied during the Muslim attack. In addition, she also attended Columbia High School in 2006, where she participated actively in sporting activities and cheerleading.

Upon graduating from high school in 2008, SZA furthered her studies at three different colleges before settling for Delaware State University, where she studied marine biology. However, due to some circumstances, she dropped out in her last semester and started taking random jobs to raise some cash.

Personal Life

SZA has been in relationships with Kehlani, Drake, and Scott Sasso. While she has not publicly confirmed any of these relationships, there has been widespread speculation.

SZA has spoken about her desire for privacy when it comes to her personal life and has said that she does not want to discuss her relationships in public. However, she has also said that she is open to finding love again and that she is open to dating.

Career

SZA first met members of Top Dawg Entertainment in 2011, when her boyfriend’s apparel company sponsored a Kendrick Lamar performance at the CMJ New Music Report. Terrence “Punch” Henderson, president of TDE, was startled by the caliber of her early work when it was presented to him.

The two remained in contact, and after SZA generated hype with the release of her two EPs in 2013, TDE signed her, becoming the label’s first female artist. Early recordings of SZA were made with her friends and neighbors, who “stole a bunch of beats off the Internet.” She released her debut EP independently on October 29, 2012.

SZA released her second EP, S, on April 10, 2013, to favorable reviews from music reviewers. Lemar & Dauley directed a music video for the song Ice Moon that she used to promote her extended play. 14 July 2013 saw Top Dawg sign SZA.

In October 2013, SZA embarked on a four-show tour with Swedish band Little Dragon, beginning at the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles on October 17 and concluding at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, New York, on October 24. 

The song Teen Spirit was released by SZA in December 2013, followed by a remix featuring American rapper 50 Cent and a music video created by APlusFilmz.

In 2014, SZA was featured on several songs from the albums of her label mates, including two songs for Isaiah Rashad‘s debut EP, Cilvia Demo, and Schoolboy Q‘s debut studio album, Oxymoron.

SZA released the track Child’s Play featuring Chance the Rapper, produced by Dae One & XXYYXX, on March 26, 2014. The studio EP Z was released on April 8, 2014; APlusFilmz directed the music video for the first track, Babylon.

SZA performed at multiple showcases at the SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas, to promote Z. Z debuted at number thirty-two on the R&B Charts in the United Kingdom during the week ending on April 19, 2014. Z opened at number thirty-nine on the US Billboard 200, selling 6,980 copies in its first week; it also peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hip hop/R&B chart.

SZA began recording her fourth EP, A, shortly after that. She was featured on Kitty Cash‘s single Moodring in July 2014. Later that month, she and Jill Scott released a duet titled Divinity

SZA released a music video for her song, Julia, from Z on July 11, 2014. She and The Internet-backed Jhené Aiko‘s Enter The Void tour in December. She released a single titled Sobriety on November 18, 2014.
