Early life and Education
Harper was born on September 6, 2011, in England and grew up in Bristol, United Kingdom.
She was brought up by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harper, while her stepfather, Ben Lumber, became an especially important figure in her musical development.
Lumber is a musician and member of the British metalcore band Acres. Her ethnicity is White British, and her religion is Christianity. No information is available about Harper’s siblings. Harper’s musical development began unusually early.
Her stepfather began uploading videos of her performing cover songs to YouTube in June 2021, when she was only nine. One of her earliest performances to attract major attention was her version of Spiritbox’s “Holy Roller.” The performance drew more than 222,000 views and positive attention from members of Spiritbox.
Harper’s musical interests developed around rock, metal and alternative music, rather than the children’s pop repertoire often associated with young performers.
Her ability to perform harsh vocals at such a young age quickly set her apart in the heavy-music community. Her stepfather also helped develop her original music.
Ben Lumber helped with her songwriting and production, while Harper later received specialized vocal coaching from Melissa Cross, a prominent vocal instructor known for metal and extreme vocal techniques. The lessons focused on helping Harper develop her screaming technique while protecting her young voice.
As her career began attracting international attention, she continued attending school while balancing schoolwork, vocal training, recording, and performances. In an interview, Harper explained that many of her classmates initially did not realize she was pursuing a music career.
Career
Thatyellaharper began her public music career in 2021, when videos of her performing rock and metal covers started appearing online.
Her interpretation of Spiritbox’s “Holy Roller” introduced her to a much larger audience. The video spread internationally and generated attention from both metal fans and the band whose song she covered.
The cover’s success quickly moved Harper beyond internet performances. In 2022, she was invited to perform “Holy Roller” alongside Courtney LaPlante, Spiritbox’s vocalist. The appearance gave the young singer a chance to share the stage with one of the artists who inspired her breakthrough.
Harper signed to Pale Chord Music and Rise Records in 2022. She created her debut original single, “Falling,” alongside musicians from the modern metal scene, including Chris Wiseman of Currents and Shadow of Intent. At the same time, her stepfather, Ben Lumber, also contributed to its writing and production.
Her biggest television opportunity arrived in 2022, when she auditioned for America’s Got Talent season 17. Harper performed “Holy Roller” in front of judges Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum and Sofia Vergara. All four judges approved her performance and sent her into the competition.
Harper subsequently performed “Bad Habits“, the Ed Sheeran song reworked alongside Bring Me the Horizon, during the America’s Got Talent semifinals. She was eliminated in August 2022, ending her run before the final stage. Her online presence remains an important part of her career.
Her YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok accounts let her share performances and connect directly with fans. As of the latest available Bandsintown profile, she has more than 5,000 followers there, while her TikTok account has built an audience of approximately 300,000 followers.
