She occasionally accompanied her Croatian-born father, Mario Mandekić, on tambourine during early family performances and first sang in a school musical production of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

After completing her secondary schooling, she finished a media designer apprenticeship before auditioning for the schlager band Wolkenfrei at age 20.

In summer 2012 Mai joined Wolkenfrei as lead singer and helped release their debut single “Jeans, T-Shirts, und Freiheit” on 19 July 2013, followed by the album Endlos verliebt in February 2014, which reached the Top 40 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

When founding members Marc Fischer and Stefan Kinski left in April 2015, Mai carried the Wolkenfrei name solo until January 2016, when she announced her new direction under the stage name Vanessa Mai.

Her first solo single “Ich sterb für dich” (19 February 2017) and the album Für Dich (15 April 2017) both debuted in the German Top 10, with production by Dieter Bohlen.
