Early Life

Natalie Mering, better known as Weyes Blood, was born in Santa Monica, California, on June 11, 1988. She was raised in an extremely pious, Pentecostal Christian home.

 Her family relocated several times during her youth, and she spent her early years in Scotts Valley, California, before settling in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, where she attended high school in 1999. Her older brothers and dad are artists, and music was a big part of her upbringing.

 Sumner Mering, her father, is a musician and guitarist who was a member of the late 1970s Los Angeles new wave band Sumner.

Mering began writing and recording songs as Weyes Blood when he was 15. She was influenced by the music of Joanna Newsom, Vashti Bunyan, and the Microphones.

 Her early tracks were folk-inspired, but she quickly began experimenting with more electronic sounds. “The Outside Room,” her debut album, was published in 2010. The album received positive reviews and helped Mering become a rising figure in the independent music scene.

Natalie Mering attended Doylestown’s Central Bucks West High School. She subsequently majored in music at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. However, she dropped out after her first year of studies.

Mering has collaborated with various artists, including Perfume GeniusSylvan Esso, and Father John Misty, in addition to her solo work. She’s also been in the movies VHYes and Friday’s Child.
