Adolph Robert Thornton Jr. (born July 27, 1985 – November 17, 2021) was an American rapper and songwriter who was known by the moniker Young Dolph

He came to the limelight after releasing his debut album, King of Memphis, in 2016. Days after its release, the album peaked at number 49 on Billboard 200, increasing Young Dolph‘s popularity across the United States. 

The rapper Young Dolph‘s album Rich Slave made it to number four on Billboard 200, increasing the global recognition of the artist. A gunshot murdered him on the 17th of November, 2021.

Early Life

Young Dolph was born to Black-American parents on the 27th of July 1985. His parents gave him the name Adolph Robert Thornton Jr. He was birthed in Chicago, Illinois, where he resided for the first two years of his life. 

His family moved to Memphis, Tennessee, in 1987. His grandmother raised him because his parents were cocaine addicts. Their addiction meant that they were hardly in Young Dolph‘s life. They were unable to give him and his siblings the necessary parental care. 

Young Dolph has four siblings, two brothers and two sisters. He is the second cousin of rapper Juice WRLD. He had a strict upbringing in his grandmother’s house, who ensured that she taught him good moral values. 


Young Dolph attended a top public school in Memphis for his elementary school education. 

He is an alumnus of Hamilton High School in Southern Memphis. 


Since his teenage days, the music star aspired to be a rapper and chose the stage name, Young Dolph. He released his debut mixtape, Paper Route Campaign, in 2008. Twenty-four months later, he established an independent music label, Paper Route Empire, in 2010.

Thereafter, Young Dolph released the mixtapes Welcome 2 Dolph World, High Class Street Music, and High Class Street Music 2, which helped increase his popularity in the Memphis music scene. 

He came to the limelight after being featured on O.T. Genasis‘ single, Cut It. The song was one of the hit singles of 2016 and was certified double platinum. The song’s success brought attention to Young Dolph‘s artistry. 

That same year, Young Dolph dropped his debut album, King of Memphis, under his indie record label. The album debuted at number 49 on Billboard 200, growing his fame in the music industry. In 2017, he dropped his second studio album, Bulletproof. Months later, he released the EP Niggas Get Shot Everyday in February 2018. The EP talked about the fact that he has been a victim of targeted shootings. The first was in February 2017, and the second was in September 2018. 

With his popularity growing in the industry, Young Dolph clinched a record deal with Empire Distribution, having refused attempts to be signed under a major label. His third album, Role Model, was released under Paper Route Empire and Empire Distribution

He worked with his cousin-by-marriage, Key Glock, to create the collaborative album, Dum and Dummer. The project was released in July 2019 and peaked at number 8 on Billboard 200. It was the first time both artists earned a Top Ten Album. 

Young Dolph released the single Sunshine during the Covid Pandemic in 2020. On the 14th of August 2020, he dropped his highly-anticipated seventh studio album, Rich Slave. The project peaked at number 4 on Billboard 200. Once again, he and Key Glock released a collaborative album in March 2021. The album is titled Dum and Dummer 2

On the 21st of January 2022, a posthumous tribute album, Long Live Dolph, was released to critical acclaim.

Personal Life

The rapper Young Dolph was the father of two children, Tre Tre Thornton and Aria Ella Thornton. They were birthed by his wife, Mia Jaye. The couple got married in 2012.  

On the 17th of November 2021, Young Dolph was shot dead by two shooters. He had been purchasing cookies for his mother at a local bakery when the assailants came out of their car and shot at him. According to an autopsy report, he was shot 22 times. He was buried on the 30th of November 2021. 

Young Dolph was loved by many for his philanthropic acts. He had donated US$25,000 to his high school. He also donated meals to several impoverished residents of the city.
