Early life and education
Aaron McGruder was born on May 29, 1974, in Chicago, Illinois, United States. He is the son of Bill McGruder and Elaine McGruder.
When he was six, his family moved to Columbia, Maryland, because his father worked at the National Transportation Safety Board.
Aaron McGruder grew up alongside one older brother, Dedric McGruder and attended Loyola Blakefield, a Jesuit school, before transferring to Oakland Mills High School. He later attended the University of Maryland, graduating in 1997 after studying African American Studies.
During his university years, he worked at the Presentation Graphics Lab and served as a DJ on WMUC’s Soul Controllers Mix Show.
Career
Aaron McGruder developed The Boondocks while attending the University of Maryland, initially publishing the strip online and later in the campus newspaper The Diamondback. The comic subsequently appeared in The Source before Universal Press Syndicate launched it nationally in 1999.
The strip became recognised for its provocative treatment of race, politics, popular culture, and American society, eventually running in hundreds of newspapers.
Aaron McGruder expanded the property into the animated television series The Boondocks, serving as creator, writer, and executive producer. He later worked on Black Jesus, another television comedy series, and contributed to the screenplay for Red Tails.
His other writing includes the graphic novel Birth of a Nation: A Comic Novel, co-created alongside Reginald Hudlin and illustrated by Kyle Baker.
