Conan O’Brien was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, on April 18, 1963. His father, Thomas Francis O’Brien, was born in 1929. He is a physician and professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, focusing on epidemiology.

His mother, Ruth O’Brien, was born in 1931 as Ruth Reardon before she got married. She was a lawyer who worked at the Boston law firm Ropes & Gray. O’Brien comes from a family with three brothers and two sisters.


O’Brien was the managing editor of the school newspaper at Brookline High School known as The Sagamore.

He interned for Congressmen Robert Drinan and Barney Frank, and in his last year of high school, he won the National Council of Teachers of English writing contest with his story “To Bury the Living.”

Following his graduation as valedictorian in 1981, O’Brien attended Harvard University. He resided in Holworthy Hall during his freshman year with future businessman Luis Ubiñas and two other roommates and then moved to Mather House for his remaining three years.
