Douglas John Mulray (aged 72 as of 2023) was born in Sydney, Australia, on December 1, 1951. His parents are Kevin Douglas Mulray and Dorothy Reid Griffith.

Growing up in the Northern Beaches suburb of Dee Why, the vibrant culture and humor of the region influenced Mulray.

He embraced his larrikin nature and developed a sharp wit from an early age. Regarding his education, he attended Northern Beaches Secondary College Manly Campus.

Personal Life

Mulray was married to Lizzie Muir. Together, they had three children, including two sons named Tom and James and a daughter named Rosie.


Mulray’s career began in the sales industry, but his lawyer father suggested he explore a career in broadcasting. He heeded his father’s advice and embarked on a radio journey that would shape his legacy.

Mulray started his radio career at 2AD in Armidale in September 1975, followed by a move to Central Coast station 2GO in Gosford. In the mid-1970s, he worked on 3AW Melbourne with a program called “Mulray & The Man.

In the late 1970s, Mulray joined the newly formed Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s alternative rock station 2JJ in Sydney, which later became Triple J. He garnered a significant following during his time there.

In 1982, he was recruited by Triple M, where he served as the breakfast host and achieved remarkable success, raising the ratings to share from 2.6 per cent to 18 per cent.

Mulray’s fictional characters, such as Madam Zenda and Jack Africa, became fan favourites, showcasing his comedic prowess.

After leaving Triple M, Mulray briefly worked in the PM drive time slot on 2SM with Peter FitzSimons before moving to Sydney radio station 2WS.

However, he reached a different level of success than at Triple M. Industry analysts ranked his breakfast show the third-best Australian metro FM breakfast show of all time in 2014.


Mulray’s career was subject to controversy. In 1992, he hosted the spin-off show “Australia’s Naughtiest Home Videos,” which was swiftly pulled from broadcast by Nine Network owner Kerry Packer after just one episode.

Mulray was fired and banned from the network for life. However, he returned in 2002 to participate in a special event and as a judge on the series “StarStruck.”


Douglas John Mulray passed away on March 30 2023, in Sydney at 72. He succumbed to liver cancer, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and entertainment.

His death was mourned by radio and media personalities, including Andrew Denton, Peter Switzer, and Ben Fordham.
