Early Life And Education

Sophie Taeuber-Arp was born on January 19, 1889, in Davos, Switzerland. She was raised by her parents, Emil Taeuber, a pharmacist, and Sophie Krüsi, in a cultured middle-class family after her father’s early death.

She had one brother. Her ethnicity was Swiss-German. She studied textile design in St. Gallen and Munich (1908–1914), then expressionist dance with Rudolf von Laban in Zurich.

From 1916 to 1929 she taught textile and design at the Zurich School of Arts and Crafts (Kunstgewerbeschule), shaping generations of Swiss designers.

Career

A founding member of the Zurich Dada movement (1916–1919), she performed abstract dances and created geometric puppets for avant-garde theatre.

Her strictly abstract compositions — circles, squares, and grids in vibrant colours — were groundbreaking. She designed interiors (Aubette in Strasbourg, 1926–1928), furniture, and the iconic “Dada Head” sculptures.

Together with her husband, Hans Arp, and Theo van Doesburg, she embodied the transition from Dada to Constructivism. Her late works include monumental reliefs and free-form drawings. Since the 1980s, her market and reputation have soared.
