Early Life and Education

Franny Lee was born on 29 April 1944 in Westhoughton, Lancashire, England, to Mr and Mrs. Lee.

He grew up in the Westhoughton and Horwich area alongside his siblings Irene Lee, Arthur Lee and Trevor Lee. His father worked as a cotton-mill manager and encouraged his son’s sporting ambitions, while Lee showed promise in both football and cricket during his school years.

Franny attended Westhoughton Secondary Modern School and later Horwich Technical College.

His performances attracted Manchester City, who signed him in 1967 for a then-club-record £60,000 transfer fee.

Lee immediately made an impact, scoring 16 league goals in his first season and helping City win the First Division title.

Franny became one of the defining players of Manchester City’s successful late-1960s and early-1970s side, scoring 148 goals in 330 appearances and finishing as the club’s leading scorer for five consecutive seasons.

He won the First Division, FA Cup, League Cup, European Cup Winners’ Cup and two Charity Shields with City before joining Derby County in 1974 and helping them win another First Division title in 1975.

He retired in 1976 after 500 league appearances and 228 goals across his club career, while his England career produced 27 caps and 10 goals, including appearances at the 1970 FIFA World Cup.

After football, he built a successful business empire, trained racehorses and returned to Manchester City as chairman from 1994 to 1998.
