Jamshedji Tata was a well-known Indian businessman and entrepreneur. He was born on March 3, 1839, in Navsari, India. He grew up with his parents, Nusserwanji Tata and Jeevanbai Tata.

He also had four siblings: Ratanbai Bamji, Virbaiji Tata, Maneckbai Tata, and Jerbai Tata. Jamsetji attended Elphinstone College for his education. He identified as Indian, but his religious beliefs are not clear.

Career

Jamshedji Tata started working in his father’s company when he was young. He was 29 when he decided to start his own trading company in 1868. He used ₹21,000 to do this, which is about US$52 million today. In 1869, he bought a bankrupt oil mill in Chinchpokli.

He turned it into a cotton mill and named it Alexandra Mill. After two years, he sold the mill and made a profit. Then, in 1874, Jamshedji Tata opened the Central India Spinning, Weaving, and Manufacturing Company in Nagpur. He chose Nagpur because he thought it was a good place for a new business.

In 1885, Jamshedji Tata started a new company in Pondicherry. He wanted to distribute Indian textiles to nearby French colonies without paying duties. Unfortunately, the company failed because there was not enough demand for the fabrics.

After this setback, Tata bought the Dharamsi Mills in Kurla, Bombay. Later, he sold that mill to purchase the Advance Mills in Ahmedabad. He named it Advance Mills because it was one of the most advanced mills of its time.

Jamshedji Tata gave a lot of money to help education and healthcare. People recognized his generosity. The EdelGive Foundation and Hurun Research India named him the greatest philanthropist of the 20th century. He was number one on the list of the world’s biggest givers during that time. His donations are estimated to be about $102 billion when adjusted for inflation.
