He later attended the University of Miami, where he competed for the Hurricanes swimming team under coach Bill Diaz. Vassallo graduated in 1985 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications.

Career

He broke through at the 1978 World Aquatics Championships in Berlin, winning gold in the 400-meter individual medley and 200-meter backstroke and silver in the 200-meter individual medley. During the same period, he set world records in the 200-meter and 400-meter individual medley.
At the 1979 Pan American Games in San Juan, Vassallo won gold medals in the 200-meter and 400-meter individual medley and added a silver medal in the 200-meter backstroke.
He was considered one of the leading American medal prospects for the 1980 Moscow Olympics, but the United States-led boycott limited his opportunity to compete.
Vassallo continued his collegiate success at the University of Miami, winning the NCAA championship in the 400-yard individual medley in 1982.
A serious knee injury that required reconstructive surgery interrupted his career, but he returned to competition and qualified for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. He finished fourth in the 400-meter individual medley final before retiring from elite competition.
After swimming, Vassallo became involved in business and sports administration. He worked with his brothers in Vassallo Unlimited, a Puerto Rican manufacturing company specializing in solid-surface construction materials.
