He captured the New York State Athletic Commission heavyweight title in 1968 and became the undisputed world heavyweight champion in 1970 by defeating Jimmy Ellis.

Frazier is best remembered for his legendary rivalry with Muhammad Ali, winning the “Fight of the Century” in 1971, losing the rematch, and suffering a brutal defeat in the “Thrilla in Manila” in 1975. He also lost to George Foreman in 1973 and 1976.

After retiring in 1976 (with a brief 1981 comeback), he trained fighters, including his son Marvis, and ran Smokin’ Joe Frazier’s Gym in Philadelphia. Frazier’s career highlighted incredible heart, durability, and blue-collar determination, cementing his place among the all-time great heavyweights.
