Skylar Diggins-Smith was born on August 2, 1990, in South Bend, Indiana, United States. She is of African American ethnicity and was raised by Tige Diggins and Renee Scott alongside her siblings Maurice Scott, Tige Diggins Jr., Destyn Diggins, and Maurice Diggins.

She attended Washington High School in South Bend, where she became one of the most decorated high school basketball players in Indiana history.

Skylar Diggins-Smith was selected third overall by the Tulsa Shock in the 2013 WNBA Draft after an outstanding collegiate career at Notre Dame.
