Sunny Varkey was born on April 9, 1957, in Ranni, Kerala, India, to K.S. Varkey and Mariamma Varkey, both educators of Kerala Syrian Christian descent.
He grew up with an elder sister Susan Mathews, and in 1959, his family relocated to Dubai, where his parents taught English to expatriates and locals, including the royal family.
At age four, Varkey was sent to Infant Jesus Anglo-Indian Boys’ School, a Catholic boarding school in Kollam, Kerala. He rejoined his family in Dubai in 1970, completing his O-Levels at St. Mary’s Catholic High School and pursuing A-Levels at Bembridge School in the UK and the British Council in Dubai.

Sunny Varkey began his career in 1980 by taking over his parents’ Our Own English High School in Dubai, which had 400 students.
