Tia–Clair Toomey was born on 22 July 1993 in Nambour, Queensland, Australia, to Debbi and Brendon Toomey.
She grew up on a sugarcane farm with her two siblings, named Elle and Molly Toomey. Her family later moved to Weipa when she was 12 after the local mill closed.
She attended Western Cape College in Weipa and boarded at Townsville Grammar School in 2009. After finishing school in 2011, she began studying nursing at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, but paused her studies to pursue athletics full-time. Tia–Clair Toomey began her athletic journey in track and field as a sprinter and hurdler during her school years.
She discovered CrossFit in 2013 through her then-boyfriend Shane Orr, who introduced her to the sport. Within two years, she made her debut at the 2015 CrossFit Games, finishing second as a rookie and earning Rookie of the Year honors.
She repeated the runner-up position in 2016 while simultaneously qualifying as Australia’s top female weightlifter in the 58 kg class.
