After China’s college entrance examinations were restored, Wu entered Hebei Medical University in 1977 to study traditional Chinese medicine and completed the five-year curriculum in two years.

Career

Wu Yiling began his professional medical career as an internal-medicine physician specializing in cardiovascular diseases after completing his postgraduate studies.

His clinical experience encouraged him to investigate the traditional Chinese medicine concept of collateral disease, and he spent years developing a systematic theory connecting traditional medical principles with modern clinical research.

In June 1992, he left hospital employment and established the Shijiazhuang Development Zone Medical Research Institute, the predecessor of Yiling Pharmaceutical, with the goal of transforming traditional Chinese medicine theories into standardized pharmaceutical products.

Wu subsequently built Yiling Pharmaceutical into a large integrated pharmaceutical enterprise combining research, manufacturing and healthcare. Under his scientific direction, the company developed medicines including Tongxinluo, Shensong Yangxin, Qiliqiangxin and Lianhua Qingwen.

His research produced major advances in cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and respiratory medicine, while his work helped establish collateral disease as a specialized field of traditional Chinese medicine.

He was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2009 and has received one National Technological Invention Second Prize, three National Science and Technology Progress Second Prizes, five provincial or ministerial first prizes and the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Science and Technology Award.

He stepped down as Yiling Pharmaceutical’s chairman in February 2023 and became its lifelong honorary chairman, while continuing his academic and research leadership.
