Mike Archer was born on 26 July 1953 in State College, Pennsylvania, United States, to parents referred to as Mr. and Mrs. Archer. He grew up in State College, where he was a three-sport star at State High School.
He went on to play college football at the University of Miami, competing as a strong safety and punter and earning letters for the Hurricanes. Siblings include at least two sisters though details about them are not publicly known. He is of American origin and follows Christianity.
Career
Mike Archer began his coaching career shortly after his playing days at the University of Miami, serving as a graduate assistant in 1976–1977 and then as an assistant coach and defensive backs coach through 1983.
He moved to Louisiana State University in 1984 as defensive backs coach and was promoted to defensive coordinator under Bill Arnsparger. When Arnsparger left after the 1986 season, Archer was named head coach of the LSU Tigers at age 34, becoming the youngest head coach in Division I-A at the time.
In his first season (1987) LSU finished 10–1–1 and ranked No. 5 in the major polls, followed by an 8–4 record and a share of the Southeastern Conference title in 1988 that included the famous “Earthquake Game” victory over Auburn. After consecutive losing seasons in 1989 and 1990, he resigned with an overall LSU record of 27–18–1.
Archer then worked as a defensive assistant at Virginia, Kentucky (including stints as defensive coordinator and assistant head coach), and spent seven years (1996–2002) as linebackers coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL.
He later returned to Kentucky and NC State as defensive coordinator, rejoined Virginia in various roles, and served with the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL, contributing to their 2017 Grey Cup championship. He also coached in the XFL with the Tampa Bay Vipers.
