Early life and education
David Douglas was born on June 25, 1799, in Scone, Perthshire, Scotland. He was born to stonemason John Douglas and Jean Drummond. His ethnicity was Scottish. He grew up in Perthshire and developed an early fascination with plants and the countryside. His siblings are not clearly identified. His religion was Christianity.
He later worked for Sir Robert Preston at Valleyfield in Fife, where access to botanical books strengthened his knowledge. He subsequently joined the Botanic Garden in Glasgow, attended William Jackson Hooker‘s botany lectures, and accompanied Hooker on Highland expeditions.
Career
David Douglas began his professional life as a gardener before becoming a botanical collector and explorer. In 1823, the Royal Horticultural Society selected him as a plant collector, following William Hooker‘s recommendation.
His expeditions took him across North America, particularly the Pacific Northwest, where he gathered seeds, plants, and natural-history specimens. His collections included the plant later widely called the Douglas-fir, as well as Sitka spruce, flowering currant, several pines, and numerous other species.
He introduced more than 200 Pacific Northwest plants to Britain and contributed specimens of animals and birds to scientific collections. Douglas also explored California and Hawaii during his later expeditions. He died in Hawaii on July 12, 1834, after falling into a cattle trap and being trampled by a bullock.
