The family later moved to Jakarta in 1966 after his father secured employment in a printing company in Setiabudi, South Jakarta. He was a nephew of former Indonesian Vice President Adam Malik.

He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in economics from the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Indonesia (FEB UI) in 1985.
