Early life and education

Kirsty Mitchell was born on June 28, 1974, in Kent, England. She was born to Mr and Mrs Mitchell.

Kirsty grew up in southern England and developed an early interest in art, photography, fashion, and storytelling. She has one sibling, Vanessa Mitchell.

She is British by ethnicity and was raised in a creative environment strongly influenced by literature, nature, and visual art. Her siblings are not detailed. Her religion is Christianity.

Kirsty Mitchell began higher education at 16, studying History of Art, Fine Art, and Photography. At 19, she specialised in Costume for Performance at the London College of Fashion, earning a Higher National Diploma with Distinction.

She subsequently studied at Ravensbourne College of Art, graduating in 2001 with a First Class BA Honours degree in Fashion Design and Textiles. During her studies, she interned with the fashion houses of Alexander McQueen and Hussein Chalayan.

Career

Kirsty Mitchell began her professional career in fashion design, specialising in surface decoration, fabric manipulation, beading, and embroidery.

She spent more than a decade in the fashion industry, including a senior design role at Karen Millen, and also spent time in India and China developing her knowledge of traditional textile crafts.

Her career changed dramatically in 2008, when her mother was diagnosed with a brain tumour and later died. Photography became Mitchell’s way of processing grief and reconnecting with the childhood stories her mother had shared with her.

In the summer of 2009, she began Wonderland, initially imagining it as a small photographic project dedicated to her mother’s memory.

The project expanded into a five-year undertaking involving elaborate costumes, giant props, handmade sets and carefully timed outdoor shoots in the English countryside.

Kirsty Mitchell left her fashion career in 2011 to focus fully on photography and finish Wonderland. The series was completed in 2014, comprising 74 photographs.

Rather than relying on digital fantasy effects, Mitchell constructed her scenes physically, often spending months making costumes and props before photographing them in natural landscapes. Her approach became associated with her description “Fantasy for Real.” The success of Wonderland transformed Mitchell into an internationally exhibited fine art photographer.

In 2014, the project won the Grand Prize in Fictional Narratives at the LensCulture Visual Storytelling Awards. Mitchell also became a Nikon Ambassador of Fine Art Photography, and her work attracted coverage from publications and institutions including the BBC, Vogue Italia, Harper’s Bazaar, The Guardian, The Telegraph, and the Royal Photographic Society.

In 2015, she launched a Kickstarter campaign to publish The Wonderland Book independently. The campaign raised £334,000 in 28 days, allowing her to produce the large-format book without compromising its materials and design. The book includes all 74 Wonderland artworks, plus hundreds of behind-the-scenes photographs, costume images, and Mitchell’s personal journal.

Kirsty Mitchell subsequently took Wonderland to museums and galleries internationally. The series has appeared in exhibitions across Europe, the United States and Asia, including presentations associated with Fotografiska in Stockholm.

In 2026, Wonderland continued its international exhibition life at Örebro Castle in Sweden, where the touring exhibition opened on May 14 and is scheduled to run until October 11, 2026.

Her next major artistic undertaking is Quiescence, a large-scale project begun in 2019. It explores motherhood, the creation of life, mortality and recovery through the same highly constructed visual language that defined Wonderland.

Mitchell is developing the project as both photography and fine-art film, with some individual sets requiring as much as a year to construct. Her husband Matthew has increasingly worked alongside her as producer, making Quiescence a collaborative family production.

In 2026, Mitchell’s work also featured in The Spellbound Spirit: Photographs by Kirsty Mitchell at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art. This exhibition combined eight Wonderland photographs with two previously unseen works from Quiescence.
