Gilbert Ramez Chagoury was born on January 8, 1946, in Lagos, Nigeria, making him 80 years old.
He is the eldest of eight children born to Ramez Chagoury and Alice Chagoury, Lebanese immigrants from the town of Miziara in northern Lebanon who settled in Nigeria in the 1940s.

He is Nigerian-Lebanese by nationality and belongs to the Maronite Catholic tradition, a faith he has practised throughout his life. For his education, he attended the Collège des Frères Chrétiens in Lebanon before returning to Nigeria as a teenager to begin his business career.
In 1967, during a visit to Lebanon, Chagoury met Rose Marie Chamchoum, daughter of a prominent Lebanese business family also from Miziara who was born in the Republic of Niger. The pair married in 1969, and it remains his only marriage on record, with no reported dating history outside the union.
Together, Gilbert and Rose Marie had four children and, in time, five grandchildren. Through the Chagoury Group, the conglomerate he co-founded with his brother Ronald Chagoury in 1971, his family fortune is estimated at $4.2 billion, built on interests spanning construction, real estate, hospitality, flour milling, water bottling, and telecommunications across Nigeria and beyond.
Ramez Gilbert Chagoury
Ramez was the eldest of Gilbert Chagoury and Rose Marie’s four children. He has since passed away, and his father has honoured his memory in a lasting way.
In November 2016, the Faculty of Architecture, Arts, and Design at Notre Dame University-Louaize in Lebanon was officially renamed the Ramez G. Chagoury Faculty of Architecture, Arts, and Design in his memory, with a permanent plaque unveiled at a ceremony attended by the Chagoury family.
At the event, his brother Christopher delivered the opening tribute, describing how the values he believed in, the love he had for this country, the hope he had for a brighter future, those things live on.
Gilbert Antoine Chagoury
Gilbert Antoine is the second son of Gilbert and Rose Marie Chagoury. Like his siblings, he studied at the American University in Paris before completing further studies at a university in New York.
He has remained closely tied to the family’s business empire, with the Chagoury Group continuing to operate under the direction of the wider family across its various divisions in Nigeria.
Anne Marie Chagoury
Anne Marie is the only daughter among Gilbert and Rose Marie’s four children. She, too, studied at the American University in Paris alongside her brothers.
Anne Marie has kept a considerably lower public profile than her siblings, with the family’s characteristic privacy extending most strongly to her.
Christopher Chagoury
Christopher is Gilbert and Rose Marie’s youngest son and, today, easily the most publicly visible of the four children. He holds a master’s degree in Business and Tax Law from Université Panthéon-Assas in Paris and an LL.M in General Legal Studies, with a specialisation in business law and international litigation and arbitration, from New York University School of Law.
He was admitted to the New York bar in 2006 and practised law in the United States for two years before returning to Nigeria to join the Chagoury Group.
Christopher now serves as Chairman of the Board of Eko Hotels & Suites, the family’s flagship hospitality property in Victoria Island, Lagos, where he has continued to represent the family at major industry events, including the hotel’s 50th anniversary Africa Legacy Summit in 2026.
