Bev Vance
Beverly Carol Aikins, née Vance and widely known as Bev Vance, is an American nurse and addiction-recovery advocate. She is the mother of JD Vance and the figure whose struggles anchor much of his memoir Hillbilly Elegy.
The daughter of James Vance and Bonnie Vance, she grew up in Middletown, Ohio, with family roots in Jackson, Kentucky, and she is in her sixties.
She gave birth to Lindsay Vance in 1979 and to JD Vance in 1984 with Donald Bowman. Her marriage to Donald Bowman ended while her son was a toddler, and she went on to marry several more times. Her third husband, Bob Hamel, adopted JD Vance and gave him the name James David Hamel.
Addiction defined much of her son’s childhood. She struggled with prescription painkillers and later heroin while working as a nurse, and Bonnie Vance and Lindsay Vance stepped in to raise the boy when she could not. The 2020 film adaptation of Hillbilly Elegy portrayed her through Amy Adams.
Her recovery is now the defining chapter of her story. She has been sober for more than ten years, and her son hosted a milestone ceremony for her in the Roosevelt Room of the White House, keeping a promise he made in his vice presidential nomination speech. She regained her nursing license and now works as a nurse educator at a substance abuse treatment centre.
Donald Bowman
Donald Ray Bowman, nicknamed Big Don, was an Ohio construction business owner and a Pentecostal Christian. He was the biological father of JD Vance, who was born James Donald Bowman in his honour. He was born in Hamilton, Ohio, on August 15, 1959, and died in 2023 at 64.
A graduate of Edgewood High School in 1979, he worked as a machinist at Hamilton Tool for 13 years before founding Bowman Construction & Excavating, which he ran for about three decades.
His marriage to Bev Vance ended when their son was a toddler, and JD Vance was later adopted by Bob Hamel. Bev Vance and Bonnie Vance described Donald Bowman as neglectful, but the teenage JD Vance heard a different account after reconnecting with him: he had fought for custody. The two rebuilt their relationship, and JD Vance spent several weeks living with his father’s family.
Donald Bowman married his second wife, Cheryl McCarty Bowman, in 1988. His obituary lists his children as Ryan Green, JD Vance, Cory Bowman, Chelsea Deal and Nikki McCarty Beedlow.
His faith left a lasting mark on both sons: Cory Bowman founded The River Church in Cincinnati and entered local politics, while JD Vance, introduced to church life through his father, eventually found his own way to Catholicism.
