Raised on 51st Street in Hoover Criminals territory, he became involved in gang life during his teens, sold drugs, and later served six months on house arrest at 21. He briefly attended several community colleges on a football scholarship but did not graduate.
He is African-American and was raised Christian, though he rarely speaks about religion.
Career
ScHoolboy Q began his music career in 2007, quickly gaining momentum after joining Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) in 2009. He independently released two critically acclaimed albums, Setbacks (2011) and Habits & Contradictions (2012), which established him as a significant force in underground hip-hop.
Tracks like “Hands on the Wheel” featuring A$AP Rocky attracted widespread attention, building a devoted fan base and setting the stage for his future success.
His major-label debut, Oxymoron (2014), marked a milestone by debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and achieving platinum certification. The album featured standout singles such as “Collard Greens,” with Kendrick Lamar, and the ubiquitous hit “Studio,” solidifying his place in mainstream hip-hop.
In 2016, he released Blank Face LP, a darker and more introspective project that many consider his artistic peak. The album included the double-platinum single “THat Part,” and showcased his evolving lyricism and production style with tracks like “Groovy Tony.”
After taking a three-year hiatus to focus on family and golf, ScHoolboy Q returned with Crash Talk (2019), which topped charts, and Blue Lips (2024), recorded during the pandemic. The latter was praised as a return to form, featuring collaborations with artists such as Ab-Soul, Rico Nasty, and Freddie Gibbs.
Throughout his career, he has remained steadfast in his loyalty to TDE, famously turning down larger offers to maintain creative control, and consistently delivering a strong, cohesive discography within modern West Coast rap.
