Taiwo Akinkunmi, born on May 10, 1936, in Ibadan, Oyo, Nigeria, emerged as the elder half of a Yoruba-origin twin pair. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Akinkunmi, nurtured him. Career

Taiwo Akinkunmi, while studying agricultural engineering at Norwood Technical College in London (now Lambeth College), stumbled upon an advertisement in 1958. This ad sought designs for Nigeria’s national flag, and from over 2,000 entries, his design emerged victorious.

On October 1, 1960, Nigeria celebrated its independence by hoisting its new flag, featuring green-white-green horizontal stripes. The white stripe bore a radiant yellow star, symbolizing unity, while the green stripes represented abundant resources and the nation’s lush landscapes.

Taiwo Akinkunmi returned to Nigeria in 1963, served in public service, and designed an enduring legacy. He was honored with the Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) award in 1994. Sadly, he passed away on August 29, 2023, leaving behind an indelible mark on Nigeria’s identity.

A masterful artist, sculptor, and photographer, Taiwo Akinkunmi‘s works enrich galleries and publications, capturing Nigeria’s captivating beauty.

In 1958, while living abroad, Taiwo Akinkunmi‘s design was chosen from thousands as Nigeria’s emblem of independence from British rule.
