Amol Rajan started his professional path in journalism after university. He joined The Independent as a reporter and rose quickly through the ranks. In 2013, at the age of 29, he was appointed editor of The Independent, becoming the youngest editor of a British national broadsheet and the first non-white editor of a national newspaper in more than a century. He held the position until 2016.
He then joined the BBC as its first media editor, covering media and technology. From 2021 to 2026 he presented the flagship Radio 4 programme Today. In 2023 he became the host of University Challenge on BBC Two, succeeding Jeremy Paxman.
He has also presented documentaries, interview series and podcasts for the BBC, and has written a book on cricket spin bowling titled Twirlymen. In 2026 he stepped back from regular presenting duties on Today to pursue independent media projects while continuing to host University Challenge.
