Arvind Gupta began his professional career after graduating from IIT Kanpur in 1975, when he joined TELCO, now Tata Motors, in Pune as an engineer trainee. His career changed direction in 1978 when he took a year’s study leave to participate in the Hoshangabad Science Teaching Programme in Madhya Pradesh. There, he developed inexpensive teaching aids from everyday materials and discovered his lasting passion for making science accessible to children.
Arvind Gupta became internationally recognized for his Toys from Trash approach, using discarded objects such as matchsticks, cycle tubes, paper, bottles, straws, and other inexpensive materials to demonstrate scientific principles.
He went on to conduct workshops in more than 3,000 schools and created thousands of instructional videos in multiple languages. His website provides free educational resources, books, toy-making instructions, and science activities.
He is also an author and translator. His first major book, Matchstick Models and Other Science Experiments, was translated into numerous Indian languages and sold more than half a million copies.
He has written numerous books on science activities and translated hundreds of books into Hindi. Gupta also worked for 11 years at the Children’s Science Centre at IUCAA in Pune, where he continued developing low-cost science education resources.
