Ayako Fujitani was born on December 7, 1979, in Osaka, Japan, to American actor and martial artist Steven Seagal and Japanese aikido master Miyako Fujitani.
Her parents separated when she was about eight years old, and she spent her early years in Osaka before living in Los Angeles during her teenage years.
