He fought in the Spanish Civil War with the POUM militia where he was wounded and became disillusioned with communist tactics, which informed his anti-totalitarian views. During World War II he worked for the BBC and as literary editor while writing his masterpieces Animal Farm in 1945, a satire on the Russian Revolution, and Nineteen Eighty-Four in 1949, a dystopian warning about surveillance and thought control.
His essays like Politics and the English Language and Shooting an Elephant remain influential for their clarity and moral courage. From imperial policeman to one of the most important voices of the twentieth century, he used clear prose to defend truth and individual freedom against all forms of authoritarianism.
