Early Life and Education

George Pérez was born on 9 June 1954 in the South Bronx, New York City, to parents Jorge Guzman Pérez, who worked in the meatpacking industry, and Luz Maria Izquierdo, a homemaker. Both were immigrants from Caguas, Puerto Rico, who met in New Jersey. He had a younger brother named David.

The family faced financial hardship, and young George began drawing at age five on grocery bags and other available paper. Comics helped him learn English and provided an escape from neighborhood challenges. He attended Cardinal Hayes High School, a Catholic institution, after his mother preferred it over the High School of Art and Design to which he had been accepted. Career

George Pérez began his professional career in 1973 as an assistant to Marvel artist Rich Buckler. His first published credit came in 1974 with a short Deathlok story in Astonishing Tales. He soon co-created the White Tiger, Marvel’s first Puerto Rican superhero, with writer Bill Mantlo. By the mid-1970s he was penciling major titles including The Fantastic Four and The Avengers.

In 1980 Pérez moved to DC Comics and teamed with writer Marv Wolfman on The New Teen Titans. The series became a major success, revitalizing the team and introducing or co-creating enduring characters such as Cyborg, Raven, Starfire, Deathstroke the Terminator, and others.

He later illustrated the universe-altering Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985–1986), drawing virtually every DC character of the era. Pérez then rebooted Wonder Woman as both penciller and later writer, grounding the character more firmly in Greek mythology. Additional high-profile work included runs on Superman, Justice League, and the long-awaited JLA/Avengers crossover with Kurt Busiek.

Pérez continued working into the 2010s on various projects for Marvel, DC and independent publishers while receiving numerous awards, including the Inkpot Award, multiple Eagle and Jack Kirby Awards. Health issues, including diabetes and vision problems, led him to announce retirement in 2019. Diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer in late 2021, he passed away on 6 May 2022 in Sanford, Florida.
