Matt Hughes was born on October 13, 1973, in Hillsboro, Illinois, to Mr. and Mrs. Hughes. He grew up alongside his twin brother, Mark Hughes, their older sister, Beth Hughes Ulrici.
Hughes became an exceptional wrestler at Hillsboro High School, winning consecutive Illinois state championships at 145 pounds in 1991, 1992.
After high school, Hughes attended Southwestern Illinois College before transferring to Lincoln College, subsequently Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.
