Early life and education
Vikram Vij was born in 1964 in Amritsar, Punjab, India. He was born to Manmohan Vij and Kusum Vij, growing up in a middle-class family alongside his sister Gauri Vij. Vikram is of Punjabi Indian heritage and follows Hinduism.
His childhood was spent in Amritsar, Delhi, and Bombay, where his mother, grandmother, and other relatives influenced his early interest in food.
At 19, he moved to Salzburg, Austria, to study Hotel/Motel Management and receive professional chef training.
Career
Vikram Vij began his culinary career in Austria, working in Salzburg and Vienna before moving to Canada in 1989. He joined the Banff Springs Hotel in Alberta and later worked at Bishop’s in Vancouver under chef John Bishop.
In 1994, he opened the original 14-seat Vij’s Restaurant in Vancouver, establishing a distinctive Indian culinary identity that attracted national and international attention.
He launched Rangoli in 2004 and later developed Vij’s At Home, a packaged-food business, and Vij’s Railway Express. In 2014, he opened My Shanti in South Surrey.
He became the first Indo-Canadian Dragon on CBC’s Dragons’ Den and also appeared on Top Chef Canada, Chopped Canada, and Recipe to Riches. His latest cookbook, My New Indian Kitchen, was published in 2025 alongside Jennifer Muttoo.
