His father, a jazz enthusiast, and his mother’s siblings, who were musicians and music teachers, introduced him to 1960s rock and jazz through vinyl records.
At age seven, he began playing the cello, switching to double bass at 13 and guitar at 14, initially learning by ear.
A broken ankle in 1975 gave him time to hone his guitar skills.
After graduating from Fairport High School in 1980, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Classical Bass from Ithaca College and a Master’s degree in Jazz Guitar from the New England Conservatory of Music in 1987.
His ethnicity is White, and he was raised in a Christian household, though his current religious beliefs are not specified.

In 1997, he joined the rock band Billionaire, releasing The Goodnight Sky (1998) and Ascension (2000) with Republic Records.
Since 1995, he has owned Black Dog Sound Studios in Stone Mountain, Georgia, and co-founded 10 Star Records.
