He later bought his first car, a Nissan Silvia S15, in 2004. Details about his formal schooling have not been widely known.
Career
Gocha Chivchyan’s career began with street racing and drag racing in his hometown before he transitioned to organized drifting.
In the early 2000s, he met Arkady Tsaregradtsev, director of the Krasnoyarsk race track “Krasnoye Koltso,” and the two began organizing drift competitions to grow the sport locally.
Gocha initially served as a judge due to a lack of competitors before becoming a driver himself.
He won the Super Drift Battle three times, in 2010, 2013, and 2014, and claimed the Drift Battle title in 2012.
In 2013, he made history as the first Russian to compete in Japan’s prestigious D1 Grand Prix series, competing in the 2013, 2014, and 2015 seasons.
His breakthrough on the international stage came with back-to-back victories in the FIA Intercontinental Drifting Cup in 2018 and 2019.
Domestically, he won the Russian Drift Series GP championship four times, in 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2023, making him the most titled drifter in the series’ top division.
He also became the first-ever winner of the Russian Drift Cup “Superfinal RDS” in 2024.
Throughout his career, he has driven for the Takayama Forward Auto team, which he owns, and has become a leading figure in the Russian Drift Series.
In recent years, Gocha has continued to compete at the highest level while also focusing on team development and engineering.
He remains the lead driver and owner of Takayama Forward Auto, working closely with engineers to advance the team’s car technology.
He has spoken about the importance of self-development in drifting and the challenges of building a competitive program without the benefits of a formal academy.
His influence extends beyond racing, as he is widely recognized as the most decorated and popular drifter in Russia, with a documentary film, “Gocha/Japan,” helping to raise his profile in the global motorsport community.
