Early life and education
Steve Johnson was born on December 24, 1989, in Orange, California. He was the son of Steve Johnson Sr., a tennis coach, and Michelle Johnson, a mathematics professor. His older sister is Alison Johnson. He is American and Christian.
He graduated from Orange High School in 2008 and attended the University of Southern California from 2009 to 2012, majoring in human performance. He left USC three classes short of completing his degree after an exceptional college career.
Career
Steve Johnson began developing his tennis career under the guidance of his father, Steve Johnson Sr., before becoming a standout junior player in Southern California. He won the CIF singles championship in 2006 and 2007 and captured the Southern California Boys’ 18 championship in 2008.
He went on to win ATP singles titles in Houston in 2017 and 2018 and Newport in 2018. He also collected two ATP doubles titles and competed in 41 Grand Slam main draws. Johnson remained a consistent presence on the tour for more than a decade before retiring from professional tennis at Indian Wells in March 2024.
His post-playing career has included tennis media work as a host of Nothing Major, a podcast he presents alongside fellow former American professionals Sam Querrey and John Isner. In May 2026, Johnson was inducted into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Men’s Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame, recognizing his exceptional USC career.
