Oliver Mlakar, born on 1 July 1935 in Ptuj — at that time part of the Drava Banovina within the Kingdom of Yugoslavia — grew up in a modest family setting. He attended the University of Zagreb, where he studied French and Italian. During his university years, Mlakar began his broadcasting journey with Radio Zagreb in 1957, and in 1965, he joined Televizija Zagreb (now HRT – Croatian Radiotelevision).

In 1984, he became the host of the legendary quiz show “Kviskoteka”, which ran for eleven years and solidified his status as a household name. His calm voice and charismatic stage presence earned him the title “The Gentleman of Croatian Television.”

In 1990, Mlakar co-hosted the Eurovision Song Contest in Zagreb alongside Helga Vlahović, one of the most prestigious moments in his career.

From 1993 to 2002, he hosted the Croatian version of “Wheel of Fortune” (Kolo sreće), further cementing his popularity.

He retired from full-time broadcasting in 2002, but his influence on Croatian television remains unmatched.
