Early Life and Education

Alexander Paulavich Hleb, now 44 years old, was born on 1 May 1981 in Minsk, then part of the Byelorussian SSR in the Soviet Union. He grew up in Minsk with his parents Pavel Hleb and Larisa Hleb. His younger brother Vyacheslav later also became a professional footballer.

Alexander Hleb began his senior club career in Belarus with Dinamo-Juni Minsk in 1998 and then BATE Borisov from 1999 to 2000. He moved to German club VfB Stuttgart in 2000, where he developed into a key creative player and earned the nickname “Zauberlehrling” (Sorcerer’s Apprentice) in Germany.

In June 2005 he transferred to Arsenal, where he played on the right-wing and in midfield, and became the first Belarusian player to appear in a UEFA Champions League final in 2006. In July 2008 he signed a four-year contract with Barcelona and was part of their 2008-09 treble-winning squad, though his playing time was limited.

Over subsequent years he had loan spells at Stuttgart (2009-10), Birmingham City (2010-11), and Wolfsburg (2011), before moving to Krylia Sovetov Samara in Russia and returning multiple times to BATE Borisov in Belarus.
