Douglas Luiz, a Brazilian footballer, was born on May 9, 1998, in Rio de Janeiro. Growing up in the Nova Holanda favela, which was characterized by poverty and high crime rates, he faced numerous challenges in his early life. 

However, Douglas Luiz was fortunate to have his parents, Edmilson Soares, and an upbringing alongside his three siblings – Daniel Soares, Devison Soares, and Daniele Soares. 

Despite the difficult circumstances of his neighbourhood, Douglas managed to attend Romarinho School in Maré, a neighbourhood located in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro.

Career

Douglas Luiz, who hails from the Vasco da Gama academy in Rio de Janeiro, commenced his professional career with the club at 18 in 2016. Demonstrating immense talent and dedication, he swiftly solidified his place as a key player for Vasco, ultimately contributing to their triumph in the Campeonato Carioca in 2017.

In July 2017, Luiz completed his move to Manchester City for a significant transfer fee of €12 million. Unfortunately, due to complications with obtaining a work permit, he could not join the team immediately and was subsequently loaned out to La Liga club Girona. Throughout the 2017-2018 season, Luiz made 35 appearances for Girona in various competitions, showcasing his skills and contributing three goals to the team’s success.

Following his return to City for the 2018-19 season, Douglas Luiz found himself being loaned out once again, this time to Girona. During his time with Girona, he managed to make a total of 22 appearances in the first half of the season. However, in January 2019, Luiz’s loan spell was cut short as City recalled him.

In July 2019, Aston Villa acquired Luiz permanently for £16.8 million since he has proven to be an integral team member and has played a significant role in elevating Villa’s status as a Premier League contender.

Douglas Luiz has been a part of Brazil’s national teams from a young age, representing his country in various youth competitions. In 2019, he was part of the victorious Brazil squad that triumphed in the Toulon Tournament. In November of the same year, he debuted for the senior national team in a friendly game against South Korea. 

His outstanding efforts earned him a position in Brazil’s squad for the 2021 Copa América, where he played an important part in guiding the team to the final. Unfortunately, Brazil fell short and lost to Argentina in the final match.

On October 28, 2023, Arsenal is said to be closely monitoring Douglas Luiz for the upcoming summer transfer window. This interest comes as Aston Villa is reluctant to let go of the talented midfielder in January. However, before making any moves, Arsenal will have to offload one of their midfielders to free up space and finances for the potential signing.
