Early Life and Education

Ethan attended Westminster School, a small preparatory institution in Connecticut, where he played football despite the program’s modest record.

He decided to attend Williams College in Massachusetts, a Division III institution, where he majored in psychology. During his time there, he excelled on the defensive line before switching to the offensive side; his size and athletic ability helped him stand out. He was named NESCAC defensive player of the year as a senior and was also an NCAA Division III All-American in the hammer throw in track and field.

Personal Life

On a blind date in his first year with the Atlanta Falcons, Brooks met Jaqueline Smith and the pair married in spring 1997. In the fall of 1999, Jaqueline was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Brooks took time away from football to support her through chemotherapy and subsequent treatment. Tragically, she passed away in March 2001. Brooks has not publicly remarried and has no known children.

In 1997, he was allocated to the World League of American Football and made the All-WLAF first team with the Rhein Fire.

He signed with the St. Louis Rams in 1997 and spent the 1998 season as a backup offensive tackle/special teams player in 15 games. In February 2000 he joined the Arizona Cardinals, appearing in 14 games with 3 starts.

In August 2002, the Baltimore Ravens signed Brooks and he went on to start 13 games in his first season with them. Over the next two years he started additional games, including stepping in at left tackle in 2004 when Jonathan Ogden was injured. He later had brief stints with the New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys in 2005 before retiring.
