Early Life and Education

Walter Zenga was born on April 28, 1960, in Milan, Italy, to Alfonso Zenga and Marina Zenga. He has one brother, Alberto Zenga. He attended local schools in Milan while progressing through the Inter Milan youth academy from the age of 11.

After his playing career, he briefly studied acting and appeared in an Italian soap opera before obtaining his professional coaching licenses through the Italian Football Federation (FIGC). He is of Caucasian (Italian) ethnicity and is Roman Catholic.

Career

Walter Zenga joined Inter Milan’s youth setup at age 11 and turned professional in 1978 after loan spells at Salernitana, Savona, and Sambenedettese.

He became Inter’s first-choice goalkeeper in 1982 and quickly established himself as one of Europe’s top shot-stoppers with his agility, command of the area, and reflexes that earned him the nickname L’Uomo Ragno.

He helped the club win the 1988–89 Serie A title and two UEFA Cups (1991 and 1994), making 328 appearances for the Nerazzurri.

Zenga earned 58 caps for Italy, featuring in UEFA Euro 1988 and starring at the 1990 FIFA World Cup on home soil, where he kept five clean sheets and went unbeaten for 517 minutes a tournament record.

He was voted the IFFHS World’s Best Goalkeeper three years running from 1989 to 1991.

Later in his playing career, he had short spells with Sampdoria, Padova, and the New England Revolution in MLS before retiring in 1999.

Walter Zenga has enjoyed a long managerial career since 1998, coaching clubs in Italy, England, Romania, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and elsewhere, including Wolverhampton Wanderers, Crotone, Cagliari, and Emirates Club.
